After a long scientific discussion with my six year old, she looked at me and said, “You keep telling me the earth is moving, but I don’t feel it moving. I just don’t understand…it makes no sense. I think you might be wrong, Mom.”
It’s tempting to base the Truth of God on what we feel, because when He moves on our behalf we feel a love that defies description. We’ll do anything to keep experiencing it. However, what happens when we don’t feel it and nothing makes sense? If we don’t have a firm grasp on what Truth really is, we will be tempted to believe that maybe God isn’t really moving at all.
The only ultimate judge of Truth is The Word of God. We must take every thought captive, even the ones we so firmly feel in our hearts are true, and bring those to the Bible. If you’re struggling to find scripture that applies to your belief, then it’s a perfect time to bring those beliefs to your small group or accountability partner. Together, you can dig into The Word until God’s Truth is your center of gravity and not the perceived truth of feelings. That way, you can avoid feeling like you’re spinning out of control.
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5
